Women's Studies Club Brings V-Day Issues to the Community

Students presented original and published readings to the Upper School community to raise awareness about violence against women and girls.
During this week’s Upper School Town Hall meeting, members of the Women’s Studies Club presented original as well as published readings and poems in support of V-Day – a global movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day was established by playwright Eve Ensler to highlight women’s rights and, every February, groups around the world produce related performances. The proceeds and projects from the program work to end violence, including through shelters and rape crisis centers. Today, there are nearly 6,000 V-Day events held annually.
V-Day has four core beliefs, which Ranney students and faculty shared with the Upper School community by highlighting key statistics regarding violence against women globally:
  • Art has the power to transform thinking and inspire people to act
  • Lasting social and cultural change is spread by ordinary people doing extraordinary things
  • Local women best know what their communities need and can become unstoppable leaders
  • One must look at the intersection of race, class, and gender to understand violence against women.
The event is also tied to NO MORE week, which runs March 6-12. NO MORE is a campaign to raise public awareness and engage bystanders around ending domestic violence and sexual assault. Students will be asked to take a pledge to stop violence against girls and women and to make a commitment to not being a bystander, explained the Club’s Advisor Ms. Kate Greenberg.
