Parent Perspectives on Ranney

from Liisa Pepe, parent of Andrew '23, Desmond '25, Kyra '27 & Deegan '29

"Nothing is more important to me as a parent than the well-being of my children. Many years ago, when evaluating possible schools for our two-year old, “well-being” meant many things.  I wanted him to be happy ... to feel safe ... to be secure ... to be free to make mistakes and learn from them without fear.  I wanted him to embrace and enhance his strengths; to understand and address his weaknesses; and to develop who he is as a person with nothing short of self-confidence.  And, of course, I wanted him to receive an outstanding education in the process.

"Today, these many years later, multiply this process by four.  We have four very different children at Ranney, each with their own unique personalities, interests, talents and challenges.  They are all amazing little people but couldn't be any more different.  We selected Ranney for each of them, starting with the Beginners program (age 3), because, at Ranney, as we were told so many years ago, “every child is known and valued.”

"It is true.  Our kids have thrived at this school, each in their own individual way.  I am truly grateful for the education and learning environment our children have experienced at Ranney."

A Q&A with Kathleen Allen, parent of Angelica '17

What was it about Ranney School that made you decide to enroll your child here? I knew that Ranney School was an excellent choice for my daughter because of its approach in the education process of a student. Ranney is concerned with developing all aspects of a student. In addition to their wonderful academic curriculum, Ranney School is dedicated in the development of the student on an individual basis. They are very concerned with the overall areas that affect a student and they diligently prepare them for the tasks that they will face in life. Educational excellence, creativity, individuality, personal growth and emotional intelligence were the key factors in my decision to enroll my daughter at Ranney. Ranney School covers all of these areas.

How was the overall admissions process experience? Wonderful! Ms. Jenna Schebell, Associate Director of Admissions was there to help.  She did an excellent job. It could not have been better. She addressed any questions or concerns that I had. My daughter was educated in the public school system, so in the transitioning from the public school into the private/independent school environment there were certain challenges curriculum-wise.  Together, the Head of the Upper School & Ms. Schebell addressed all of my concerns and made the process very smooth.

How would you describe the independent school education and experience that your daughter is receiving at Ranney?
I am very happy with having transferred my daughter to Ranney School….  My only regret is that I did not do it sooner! Ranney is a wonderful environment where students are encouraged to pursue not only their education but are also highly encouraged to pursue what they are most passionate about.

Would you recommend Ranney to your friends if you felt it was the right-fit school for their children? Yes! Absolutely!

On student-athletes, from Michael Vaiani, parent of Nicole '16

"Ranney School has given not only Nicole but both JoAnn (Mrs. Vaiani) and myself a nurturing and positive experience. Nicole's first day at Ranney School was as a freshman. Yet, all of her teachers made Nicole feel as if she had been there since kindergarten and part of the Ranney family. From the administration to the faculty, it is obvious that there is a team effort to bring out the best in your child so that they can excel beyond their expectations. In my opinion, past Headmaster, Dr. Lawrence Sykoff, past Upper School Head Paul Zanowski and current Headmaster, Dr. John Griffith are  examples of excellence in education for others to follow. I highly recommend Ranney School for anyone wishing the best education and support for their child."

Nicole Vaiani gained early admittance to the University of Pennsylvania's Varsity Fencing Program and its Wharton School of Business in 2015. Nicole is a nationally ranked fencer and has competed on Ranney's fencing squad throughout her Upper School tenure.
