French Language Students Hold Evening Soiree to Benefit UNICEF

On May 24, Middle School French language students performed in Panther Hall for more than 120 parents and faculty to raise funds for a UNICEF project benefitting children in French-speaking Africa. Dubbed the French Soiree, the program included theater, poetry, songs, skits, traditional Brittany dances, Francophone Hip Hop and more—all performed in French with translations provided on screen.

Students also created posters and displays for the Panther Hall gallery based on research they conducted throughout the spring. In addition, they dressed as Parisian waiters and served French cuisine to their guests for a full evening of cultural celebrations. The event raised more than $2,500 for UNICEF, which the Ranney students chose to donate specifically to items that can benefit children in French-speaking Africa who do not have safe access to an education. Theset items include:

  • 3 deep-well water pumps, providing clean, safe drinking water for 3 villages in drought-stricken Chad, Burkina Faso, and Central Africa.  These pumps will help to change the lives of hundreds of people for the better. In particular, girls in these communities will no longer be required to forgo school in order to fulfill their traditional duty of walking long, grueling hours each day to fetch water.
  • 3 "school in a box" kits to bring school to 120 children (all materials for 3 classrooms of 40 children each).
  • 100 individual chalkboards, so that classes may continue once pencils and paper in the kits are used.
  • 1,500 malaria pills and 500 oral rehydration salt packs, saving the futures of 1, 250 children dying from malaria and dehydration.
  • 3 "super-hero" packs which will provide 300 vaccines, 3 vaccine carriers, 30 large mosquito nets and 700 anti-parasite pills; thereby protecting some 1,380 children from diseases such as malaria, measles, tetanus, polio and brain-devastating infections.

“It is not every day that one can be certain that the money one donates will actually be used to save a life or improve it.  As a result of our French language students’ initiative, creativity, hours of effort and drive, they will help to save thousands of lives in French Africa and offer hundreds of children the chance at an education,” noted the program advisor and French language faculty member Dr. Eva Martin.
