Peardon Reports on Summer STEM Camp

by Katie Peardon, Class of 2020

The Envision STEM sleep-away camp that I attended this summer in Pennsylvania provided me with exciting learning experiences which I believe will give me an advantage in my future STEM explorations. The six-day experience included a visit to the Franklin Institute—my favorite part was the brain exhibit because it was the most interactive. I learned how the functioning of our brains effects everything we do and feel. Later that day, we split into groups to build a robot. Even though I had not previously had an interest in robotics, I had a great time and look forward to building another one! We were able to race our robots later in the week and also conduct specialized lab work related to robotics.

On the third day, former NASA Astronaut Mike Massimino spoke to our group about his difficult path to becoming an astronaut. His inspiring presentation included pictures from his space explorations. The lab portion of the day included learning about the consequences of concussions and helmet construction. We also had an ethical debate on whether certain middle school sports should be cut, due to concussions, which opened my eyes to real-world problems.

Toward the end of the week, we listened to a panel of teachers, professors, and scientists, and were able to hear about their professional experiences and ask questions about their jobs. The most interesting thing that I learned was that there are many ways to be successful, such as living out your passion, fulfilling your goals, and helping or motivating people.

We also spent time learning about sustainability and making the world a better place. Back in the lab, we made a simple de-salination device that turns salt water into drinking water without machines. Then, we completed a FUEL (feedback for understanding emerging leaders) self-assessment to evaluate ourselves as students. This, along with our mentor assessments, helped me to understand what academic skills I am strong in and those that I need to develop. My mentors' notes helped me to see how my teachers and student body see me as a student.

As the Envision STEM camp came to end, we were all sad to leave. I had truly underestimated how wonderful the experience would be. The most valuable thing I learned was to take the opportunities that you get, such as this STEM camp, and use them to make your life better. I am so glad that I had this opportunity and I would not trade it for anything else.
