Sailing Takes 1st at OCC Fall Invitational

Seventeen high school teams from 13 high schools throughout Ocean, Monmouth, and Union Counties sailed in the 2016 Orange Coast College (OCC) Fall Invitational on Sept. 24, 2016 in Toms River Yacht Club.

Under cloudy skies and just enough drizzle to keep everything wet, the teams cast off around 9:30 in the morning to begin racing in 9-12 NNW breeze. The pressure was up and down, with oscillating right and left shifts, but the general direction held consistent throughout most of the day, requiring only a few course adjustments.

Twelve races were completed throughout the day (six A, six B), with each division sailing W4, then W3, courses for each set.

The Ranney School Panthers established and maintained a comfortable lead to end the day in 1st place with 34 total points. The Southern Regional Rams came in 2nd with 44 points, and the Christian Brothers Academy Colts rounded out the top three teams with 58 points. Trophy plaques were awarded by OCC Sailing Club Manager Roy Wilkins to the top three teams, along with an OCC burgee for the Ranney Panthers.

Update: On October 1, the 13 NJISA high school sailing teams arrived at Toms River Yacht Club to sail in the leagues’ fall fleet championship, which serves as the qualifier to advance teams to the two district championships. Sixteen total races, eight in each division, were completed for the day, with W4 and W3 races sailed in each set.

The Southern Regional Rams took first place with 37 points, followed closely by the Ranney Panthers with 42 points.  The CBA Colts took third place with 45 points.  These top three teams, along with fourth place Rumson-Fair Haven Bull Dogs, will advance to the MASSA District Gold Championship in mid-October.
