Science Olympiad Team Competes Regionally

After a weather delay, 15 members of the Science Competition Club competed in the New Jersey Regional Science Olympiad at NJIT on Friday, 12 January:  Alexander Ge ‘24, Alex Liu ‘24, Arshay Patel ‘24, Riya Sikand ‘24, Rose Virdi ‘24, Anthony Abboud ‘25, Sophia Behar ‘25,  Lewis Forrest ‘25,  Krishna Khetani ‘25, Sabrina Lo ‘25, Khushi Patel ‘25, Cole Serrapica ‘25, Julia Stobie ‘25, Aidan Wang ‘25, and Lucas Yanney.

Science Olympiad is a team competition that crosses multiple science and engineering disciplines.  Students work together in pairs and threes in events that test learning, lab, and building skills. At NJIT, 22 schools competed in 12 different events, and, despite a mishap with the plane that necessitated a Ranney scratch from the Flight event, we placed 13th overall.

Individually, Krishna and Sophia earned 4th place medals in Forensics, where they had to investigate a crime scene.   In addition, we placed in the top half of the draw in five events--showing continued growth from last year:  8th place in Scambler (Julia and Cole), 8th place in Astronomy (Alex and Alexander), 10th place in Optics (Anthony and Lewis), 10th place in Write It-Do It (Rose and Lucas), and 11th place in Forestry (Cole and Khushi).  This is the second year for Julia and Cole in Scrambler, and they made design refinements that brought them close to medaling. I’m hopeful that they can build on this in spring invitational events.
