Lower School Library Classes Work Together to Complete Mural

Students across the Lower School listened to the read-aloud Sky Color by Peter H. Reynolds. In the story, Marisol and her class are tasked with painting a mural of the sky. The problem is they don't have blue paint.
At the end of the book, Marisol unveils a mural depicting a colorful sky devoid of blue. In library class with Lower School Librarian Mr. Steele, students worked together to recreate the mural from the book. The entire division collaborated, using various art materials to accomplish the task. Each grade worked on a developmentally-appropriate task to complete as a contribution:
  • Fifth graders colored a popsicle stick rainbow to add to the sky.
  • Fourth graders colored fish to jump through the sky.
  • Third graders filled long strips of paper with color to serve as a background for the sky.
  • Second graders created colorful patches in the sky with tissue paper and old book pages.
  • First graders used crumpled paper to make clouds in the sky.
  • Kindergarteners colored fish to jump through the sky.
  • Pre-k students painted paper plates to add colorful patches to the sky.
  • Beginners used dot painters to add colorful patches to the sky.
