Peer Workshops Grow Faculty's Design Thinking Skills

As part of ongoing professional development in Design Thinking, Ranney faculty are participating in peer workshops throughout the year in our Innovation Labs. On December 6, faculty from the world languages department gathered in the lab to test out their design and problem-solving skills. They had 10 minutes to design either a holder for a dry-erase marker (so that a teacher may not lose it), or a stress reliever/fidget that students might use during class.

Design Thinking is an empathy-based creative and analytic approach to experiential learning that it is being incorporated into Ranney's STEAM curriculum at all grade levels. STEAM is an integrated approach to science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. Together, these educational approaches encourage students to make real world connections, take thoughtful risks, persist in problem solving, and embrace collaboration—all skills and essential capacities needed for success in college and beyond.

The workshops are being run by Visual Arts teachers Pamela Shipley and Madeleine McCarthy who have both been trained at the Nueva School Design Thinking Institute at Stanford University. More than 12 Ranney faculty members across various disciplines have now attended the institute.
