ABOUT THE SHOW:Set in Victorian England, it opens with Sara bidding her father, Captain Crewe, farewell as she leaves her childhood home in India to be escorted to London by her father’s solicitor, Mr. Barrow. She arrives at the Seminary cradling her doll, Emily, a parting gift from her father.
Informed of the expectations of Captain Crewe, Miss Minchin, Headmistress, accepts what she believes to be a pampered little girl, but Sara proves intelligent, polite, and creative. Miss Minchin is secretly jealous of Sara for her cleverness, but openly praises and flatters her because of her father's wealth.
Several years pass and Sarah has settled into her life at Miss Minchin’s. She is treated to a luxurious birthday party upon Captain Crewe's request, and Sara purchases gifts for all her friends despite it being her special day. During the party, Mr. Barrow informs Miss Minchin that Captain Crewe has died and his partner has gone missing. He adds that business troubles have rendered Captain Crewe penniless. Sara finds herself an orphaned pauper. Enraged that she will never be reimbursed for money spent on Sara, Miss Minchin seizes all of Sara's possessions and tells her that she will have to live in the attic next to Becky and work as a servant to continue living at the school.
For the next several years Sara is made to teach the younger students and run errands in all weathers. She is starved and abused by Miss Minchin, but finds solace in her friend Becky. Together, they meet the mysterious Ram Dass and pet monkey from India. They have moved in next door, along with Mr. Carrisford (Captain Crewe’s long lost business partner). Ram Dass secretly arranges gifts of food and blankets for the two girls.
One night, Sara and Becky are discovered entertaining the other girls in the attic. Both Sarah and Becky are scolded by Miss Minchin. Afterwards, Miss Minchin remembers her own sad childhood.
The next morning, while Mr. Carrisford and friends discuss their fruitless search for Captain Crewe’s missing daughter, Sara arrives to return the mischievous monkey. In conversation, she mentions to Mr. Carrisford that she had lived in India. In the climax of the story, it is revealed that Sara is the missing daughter of Mr. Carrisford’s late business partner, Captain Crewe, and that he was her father's friend. When Miss Minchin visits to reclaim Sara, she is informed that Sara will be living with Mr. Carrisford and her entire fortune has been restored. Miss Minchin coldly asks Sara to come back and continue being a student at her school, but Sara rejects her offer. Becky is invited to live with and be the personal attendant of Sara.
