Middle School Musicians Shop for Tots

Along with various parents and administrators, members of Ranney’s Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society® took to a Toys R’ Us store in Eatontown, where they purchased 150 music-related toys for the “Toys for Tots” foundation on December 5, 2011. Under guidance of such role models, one Upper School student — Melanie Scopellite ’14 — will lead all three divisions in the collection of even more toys to be donated to “Toys for Tots” by December 15, 2011.

Each year, it is “Toys for Tots’” mission to collect new, unwrapped, toys to be distributed as Christmas gifts for needy children throughout the community. With this December marking Ranney’s sixth “Musical Toys for Tots” drive, Jr. Tri-M® has collected just over 450 toys for “Toys for Tots” since 2006. Of the approximately $2,344 raised to purchase this year’s toys, most proceeds came from a Middle School “Penny War” hosted by the Jr. Tri-M® Society. Since 2009, this grade-level competition has sparked both fun and giving as students donate their excess coins and dollars to charity for the chance to win a sixth, seventh or eighth grade dress-down day.

Armed with calculators and funds from their “Penny War,” five shopping squads scanned the shelves of their local Toys R’ Us store for musical toys that either sang, played or just looked like music on Saturday morning. After searching for products within a $15 to $20 range and tallying up cart loads of toys, the teams proceeded to check-out to see who came closest to their budgeted amount without going over.

Then, it was off to the U.S. Marine Base in Lincroft, where students unloaded their cars and followed some very appreciative marines to a storage area filled with thousands of toys to be distributed to children throughout Monmouth County on a need-by-need basis. A fun, educational, and uplifting experience that had each participant already buzzing about next year, these students proved themselves to be caring and hardworking individuals whose families should be very proud. “I feel especially blessed to have experienced this service project with Jr. Tri-M® once again this year,” said General Music/Chorus Teacher and Jr. Tri-M® Advisor Lillianne Torrente.

Mrs. Torrente also thanked those parents and administrators who contributed to the event’s success. Their “support, generosity, goodwill and humor helped make the morning extra special for all,” she said. Under guidance of such role models, one Upper School student — Melanie Scopellite ’14 — will lead all three divisions in the collection of even more toys to be donated to “Toys for Tots” by December 15, 2011.
