Welcome to Middle School

Welcome to our Middle School (Grades 6-8)

The Middle School years mark an important journey for young students, as they work toward developing the skills needed for advanced academic work. Mindful of age-appropriate development, however, it is imperative that the adolescent learner have an outlet to develop those skills in an innovative and dynamic classroom setting.

Middle School students thrive when challenged and excel when they are asked to think creatively. They seek out structured opportunities for adventure and discovery, while still yearning for room to play freely. They also crave the freedom to work independently, yet they collaborate willingly and without hesitation. In the midst of this dynamic period of development, Ranney Middle School provides a supportive environment for students to navigate these evolving academic and emotional characteristics. It is our objective to harness this energy and enthusiasm for learning, in order to foster a passion for growth and knowledge that will be the foundation for Upper School success.

The dedicated and experienced faculty of our Middle School believe strongly in the value of partnering with our families. We accomplish this through a student-centered, collaborative approach to educating the whole child. We seek outcomes that are academically challenging, while keeping in mind the importance of family, extracurricular passions and adolescent maturation. We promote the skills necessary for positive student-teacher relationships, both inside the academic classroom and through our advisory system. Our goal is to inspire students to engage in the learning process without a fear of outcomes, all the while building meaningful relationships with their peers, faculty and staff.

We welcome you to inquire further about what we do in the Middle School and encourage you to join us for a visit!

Our Approach

Middle School can be hard, but it does not have to be.  At Ranney, we make the science of the Middle School years work for us by offering an academically rigorous environment with an intentional support system designed to help students work through challenges, in and out of the classroom. Through small class sizes, our Advisory Program, and grade-level Deans, each student is supported by a team of educators who take the time to know, value, encourage, and support them. Students rotate through classes in a six-day cycle where one class is dropped each day ensuring that particular classes do not fall at the same time each day. Our academic curriculum is enhanced by a myriad of extracurricular options. Student may elect to take a course in Orchestra, Band, Chorus or Fine Arts (Drama, Music, and Art). During seventh period each day, students may choose to participate on a sports team or in an activity (with many options ranging from Robotics to Ultimate Frisbee). The six-day cycle also includes time for study hall, grade-level meetings and assemblies, and a period of recess during which students can relax and socialize (without cell phones). Ranney’s curriculum and intentional approach addresses the needs of every student at all levels of ability, helping to build confidence and maturity, nurture talents, and establish the academic skills needed for success in Upper School.
