Welcome to Upper School

Welcome to our Upper School (Grades 9-12)

In the Upper School, we seek to celebrate all members of our diverse community and empower their individual voice. We feel that it is equally important to foster a real sense of unity within the entire Ranney community and across all of our divisions (Lower, Middle and Upper). We are one school, existing together on a beautiful campus, and we support, encourage and teach each other every day. This collaborative environment is a hallmark of great independent school communities.

The Upper School is the culmination of many important foundational years in Ranney’s Middle and Lower Schools. Based on the excellent work done in those divisions, the Upper School looks to take the skills and lessons learned to the next level. With the addition of our new community members, we seek to expand what has already been learned and give our students the confidence to ask questions, to push boundaries and to explore their worldview.

The Upper School is rich with opportunities for our students. There are academic challenges to accept, emotional intelligences to develop, passions to discover and friendships to be made. Upper School is the time to truly grow into one’s self and to confidently step into young adulthood. In order for a school to foster such a deep level of growth, it must be a safe space for all of its students—a place where children can take risks without ridicule, fail without failing and step into the unknown with the right level of guidance and independence. Without question, these are nuanced areas to navigate and I take the responsibility of creating such a safe and welcoming space very seriously. Creating this culture and this kind of community is the most important aspect of school leadership.

Our faculty and administrative team continue to dig into and enhance our curriculum and to work with all stakeholders in our community to ensure that we offer the most engaging, relevant and comprehensive education possible. Across all disciplines, our curriculum provides a foundation for the intellectual growth of our students and, as a result, aims to be stimulating and mindful of the past, present and future. Our goal is to empower students to enter the world prepared to make a difference and to have an impact. Our co-curricular programs, including athletics, arts, clubs, travel, service projects and more, are the heart of our institution and they create endless opportunities to teach important life skills, such as commitment, balance and integrity.

Above all, Ranney is a school steeped in the tradition of meaningful relationships. We are a family and we take pride in engaging with every member of our community with respect, purpose and honesty.

Our Approach

Ranney’s rigorous and dynamic Upper School curriculum is designed to engage and challenge each student in their educational journey. During Upper School, students transition from adolescence to adulthood; in the midst of this significant emotional and physical change, students must face the task of preparing for and selecting a college that is an appropriate match for their interests, aptitudes, talents, and goals. Through small class sizes, strong advisory and college counseling programs, and a student-centered approach to education, Ranney fosters Upper School students’ independence, emotional intelligence, and character

Teachers challenge every student uniquely and often provide students guidance beyond academics. Our goal is to create a foundation upon which students will graduate from Ranney with the ability to succeed in college and beyond. Freshmen and sophomores pursue a prescribed program to ensure that they are confident and capable in reading, writing, mathematics, creativity, critical analysis, research, organization, and study skills.

Juniors and seniors have more flexible curricular choices to pursue their academic and creative interests. In addition to academics, our students are encouraged to pursue ambitions in the arts, athletics, and service. Upon graduation, Ranney students are confident, empathetic, resilient problem-solvers and self-advocates who think globally and who understand the importance of work/life balance.
