Forensics, public speaking and debate encourage students to use their performing skills through drama and public speaking. Forensics at Ranney begins in 4th and 5th grade as an after-school activity. By the time students reach Middle School, they have already been primed for the additional vocal training and instruction in public speaking skills they will receive from our award-winning Middle School forensics coaches.
Since its inception in 1994, the Ranney Middle School Forensics Team continues to garner awards at various forensic competitions and venues throughout New Jersey. Most recently, the 2015-16 team earned two Featured Finalist awards in the categories of Humorous Interpretation and Storytelling at the November 2015 Rumson Country Day School Forensics Festival. Ranney will hold its annual Forensics Middle School Invitational in April 2016. The 2014-15 team earned 5 “Best Performance” Awards, 1 “Best Dramatic Interpretation” Award, 1 “Best Overall Storytelling” Award and 1 “Best in Festival” Award" at the 2015 Invitational.
The poise and presentation skills students learn through Middle School competition become invaluable as they take on more challenging meets in the Upper School, when they can join the New Jersey Drama and Forensics League, a state-wide competitive association sponsored by high school theater directors. They may also aspire to the debate team and attend meets against other public and private high schools.
