Middle School

Grades 6-8
Physical Education
In this program, there is an emphasis on organized team activities. Individual sports, team activities, recreational activities and team camaraderie are taught. An even greater emphasis is placed on physical fitness, sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play. With an emphasis on physical fitness and collaborative play, students in physical education class complete activities that encourage strength, flexibility and endurance. All students are required to wear proper physical education uniforms to class each day.
Interscholastic Athletics
The Middle School athletic program is open to all students in Middle School. All students are urged to participate and, in some cases, a no-cut policy prevails. Practices are held each day during the season during physical education class. Games are scheduled with other schools during each season.
Instruction at this level includes increasing the swimmer’s endurance through further refinement of the following swimming skills: front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and sidestroke. The course also includes basic rescue and water safety skills.
Health and Wellness
The Middle School Health and Wellness program is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop positive habits and relationships. Students learn to better understand how health and wellness issues impact themselves, their peers and the greater community. This understanding leads to intrapersonal and interpersonal strength, confidence and acceptance. These programs are presented either by the CentraState Healthcare System’s Student Health Awareness Center or the New Jersey State Police.
Health and Wellness topics are determined based on what is educationally and developmentally appropriate. Some topics vary from year to year while other topics remain the same but are adjusted for each grade level, ensuring a review of previous material as well as a progression of material, insight and depth. Standard topics presented are:
  • Bullying Prevention
  • Internet Safety
  • Substance Awareness
  • Growth and Development
  • Nutrition and Body Image.
