Dr. Sobieski Selected to Conduct CJMEA Chamber Orchestra

Ranney School Performing Arts Department Chair Dr. Dorothy Sobieski was selected to conduct the Central Jersey Music Educators Association Region II Intermediate Chamber Orchestra this year, marking the second time CJMEA has selected Dr. Sobieski to work with the most talented students in Region II, which includes Hunterdon, Monmouth, Mercer, Sumerset, Middlesex and Union counties.

Previously, in 2014, Dr. Sobieksi conducted the CJMEA Region II String Orchestra. The Chamber Orchestra is the most advanced group, all Middle School Students, grades 6-8, 16 first violins, 16 second violins, 12 violas, 12 cellos and 4 basses. The selection process to be accepted into this group is by audition, which took place on January 26. Approximately 250 students auditioned with required scales, solos and sight reading, to be accepted in these highly selected ensembles. (From Ranney School, both Rowan Johnson and Jason Woska were selected to the String Orchestra.)

“After careful consideration, I selected a program for the CJMEA Chamber Orchestra that not only reflects variety of musical styles and genres, but also touches upon diversity in music, and (important for me personally) celebrates my heritage,” said Dr. Sobieski. “I will work on Divertimento in F Major, K138/125c for string orchestra by W. A. Mozart, Two Elegiac Melodies, Op 34 by Norwegian composer Edward Grieg, Tango No. 1 ‘Coral’ and Tango No.2 ‘Canengue’ by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, and finally the first movement of Concerto for String Orchestra by a Polish woman composer, Grazyna Bacewicz, whose 50th anniversary of passing is this year.”

“I am very honored to be working with talented string students representing so many strong string programs in our area. I feel privileged to be recognized by CJMEA again and asked to share my experience, knowledge and passion for music with these fine young musicians.”
