MS Debate Takes Home First in Team Wins

The Middle School debate team participated in their third debate of the year on Saturday, February 23rd, at Bolger Middle School in Keansburg. Other participating schools besides Bolger were Barkalow Middle School (Freehold), Rumson Country Day, Holy Cross (Rumson), and Knollwood School (Fair Haven). The team is a member of the Jersey Shore League of the Middle School Public Debate program. 
 
The topics were:
  • Tracking apps do more harm than good
  • The US should not sell arms to Saudi Arabia
  • College athletes should be paid
  • Ban the sale of e-cigarettes
The following students participated:
  • Ethan Bodner, Desmond Pepe, Lucas Yanney, Khushi Patel, Cole Serrapica, Kieran Collins (Class of 2021)
  • Lindsay Berliner, Crosby Collins (Class of 2022)
  • Julia Yanney, Rowan Johnson, John DePalma, Maya Barthwal, Andrew Pepe, Ankush Govil (Class of 2023)
Ranney, coached by Dr. Carol Palermo, took home the following honors:
  • First place school for number of team wins
  • First place for individual team wins (Julia Yanney, Andrew Pepe, Maya Barthwal)
  • Second place for individual team wins (Crosby Collins, Ankush Govil, John DePalma)
  • Rowan Johnson -- Top speaker for Ranney School
  • Julia Yanney -- The Golden Gavel Award, for the overall speaker with the top amount of points. 
The next debate is on Saturday, April 13th, at Ranney School.
