Seventh Grade Students Premiere Summer Reading Movie Trailers

The seventh grade students in Mrs. Swiatocha’s Humanities classes had two books to read over the summer. One assigned book required a standard essay, but the other was a choice from a short list. Once the students returned this fall, they were grouped by which book they chose and tasked to create a movie. Mrs. Swiatocha turned the Paulus Library into a movie theater for the day on Sept. 19, so the groups could premiere their Summer Reading Movie Trailers.

In a lesson about setting, genre, and characters, Mrs. Swiatocha found a creative, fun way to produce summer reading “book reports,” while also teaching video editing and creation skills.
The groups had to make a storyboard beforehand and were given restrictions about what software to use and what topics had to be covered. Each of the trailers had to have a “hook” to try and entice any viewers to read the book.

After the videos are viewed by their classmates and they talk through the projects, each student is required to write a self-reflection piece about the effort.
