Panthers with a Purpose Contribute Meaningfully

Ranney School’s mission statement includes three important words: Lead, Create, Contribute. The campus is busy with all three, but Panthers with a Purpose is putting a definite focus on “Contribute” as community members look to help those around them and make a lasting impact. The Fall 2019 Service Initiatives focus is on Fighting Hunger.

On November 1, there will be a campus-wide initiative where Ranney School will partner with Kids Against Hunger Philadelphia to package 16,000 meals to support The Philabundance BackPack program, which provides free, nutritious and easy-to-prepare supplemental meals for kids at Philadelphia-area schools. Each backpack contains four meal kits that provide six prepared servings, for a total of 24 servings. This initiative resulted from a proposal submitted by Ranney sixth grade student Nick Magnone, and the expense of the donated food has been generously underwritten by the Mangone family. Students across all three divisions will take part in this school-wide day of service, and there will also be opportunities for faculty, parents, and alumni to volunteer.

In a partnership with Students Change Hunger—a federation of New Jersey foodbanks, including Fulfill—Ranney will compete other New Jersey schools to collect as much food as possible for our local food banks (Lunch Break and Fulfill). At the end of the challenge, the schools that donate the most food will be presented with awards. A group of Upper School students, led by Emily Zimmerman and Sandy Wilderotter, are already gearing up to inspire our community to elevate the impact of our annual food drive.

The Art Department, across all divisions, is spearheading the Students Rebuild Challenge, which will begin this fall and run through the end of the year. Students will create illustrated versions of recipes and submit them to the Bezos Family Foundation. For each recipe received, the Foundation will make a $3 donation to organizations addressing hunger and malnutrition around the world. The Art Department will also be submitting a banner for the CROP Hunger Walk, which is on October 20.
