Emily Chang ' 20 Featured in the January Issue of the Learn to Skate USA Magazine

Emily Chang 20, was interviewed for an article in the January issue of the Learn to Skate USA magazine.   She shares tips for new skaters and parents.

What’s your favorite part about being a Learn to Skate USA instructor?
I love being able to impart my knowledge to younger students and share the joy of ice skating as the sport is so special to me. The best feeling is seeing my students’ faces light up when they finally understand something or master a difficult element.

What is the most important thing for a beginning skater to know?
Ice skating is undoubtedly a daunting task, but beginning skaters should not let themselves be intimidated. Each person has different natural abilities, so some skaters may excel quicker than others. However, one’s progress should serve as motivation rather than discouragement. Like any sport, practice makes perfect. Do not let fear stop you from experiencing one of the most enjoyable activities!

What is the most important thing for a beginning parent to know?
Parents always forget to dress their children properly, and this is vital to providing a positive experience on the ice. Gloves are one of the most important things that parents often forget to give their kids. As beginner skaters are expected to fall, their fingers will quickly become cold from the ice. They will also be less inclined to try new things out of fear of falling and getting their hands colder. In addition to gloves, all skaters should be dressed warmly in layers, as well as a helmet and knee/elbow pads for beginners.

What advice would you have for someone who is afraid to fall on the ice?
It’s OK to fall! In fact, falling is one of the first things you will learn as this skill will provide you the confidence to learn more advanced elements. If you are afraid of falling, you will not be able to challenge yourself. You can also risk a more serious injury if you do not know how to fall properly. All skaters, even professional ones, fall on the ice. After all, it is slippery! By being comfortable on the ice and knowing the proper way to fall and get up, you will provide yourself a safer and more successful skating experience.

What do you think are the benefits of being part of Learn to Skate USA?
Being part of Learn to Skate USA has taught me the importance of patience and understanding with my students, something I’ve learned to apply to all aspects of my life. I think Learn to Skate USA is a great place to get started because it provides a safe and enjoyable environment for beginner skaters. I have only had positive experiences with Learn to Skate USA, and I look forward to many more.
