Ranney Students Welcome Lunch Break to Campus

Lunch Break visited campus on Thursday, October 21 to speak with each of the divisions about age-appropriate topics to help teach students about Global Citizenship, as well as prepare them for upcoming school-wide community engagement events.

Lunch Break provides life’s basic necessities of food, clothing, life skills and fellowship to the financially insecure individuals and families in Monmouth County and beyond.

In Lower School (grades three, four, and five) and Middle School, Lunch Break team members started with a guided breathing exercise where students thought about an all-you-can-eat buffet. They defined the difference between hunger and food insecurity and discussed the prevalence of food insecurity among children. They discussed causes of food insecurity and the impact of COVID-19. The discussion also touched on ways in which students could contribute, and left time for a lot of Q&A.

With older students, Lunch Break team members talked about youth homelessness. The discussion included breaking preconceived notions of what homelessness looks like from the outside and how circumstances are not always what you expect.

On November 3, Ranney students from all divisions will come together for the second Panthers Against Hunger event.  In 2019, students, faculty, and parents packaged 16,000 meals to support Philabundance and the Kids Against Hunger program based in Philadelphia.  This year, Ranney’s goal is to assemble 20,000 meals to support Lunch Break and help those who are food insecure in the area.

In addition to the meal-packaging event on November 3, Upper School student-led club RHOPE (Ranney Helping Other People Eat) will be coordinating a food drive for Lunch Break’s Client’s Choice pantry.

The food drive, combined with the packaged meals, will count towards Ranney’s point total in the Students Change Hunger challenge with Fulfill.  For more information on Ranney’s participation in Students Change Hunger, or to participate in the online food drive, visit https://fulfillnj.fenly.org/ranneyschool2021/
