Ranney Delivers Over 3,000 Pounds of Food to Lunch Break

On Wednesday, November 3, Ranney students from all three divisions, ages 3 through grade 12, worked together to assemble 21,000 meals in a school-wide community engagement initiative to support Lunch Break and tackle the problem of food insecurity in our area.

Leading up to this event, Lunch Break and a team of cross-divisional Ranney faculty partnered together to develop and deliver a curriculum to help students understand the problem of food insecurity and elevate students’ understanding and engagement around effective community impact. A Lunch Break team visited Ranney’s campus on Thursday, October 21 to speak with each of the three divisions. Lunch Break explained the difference between hunger and food insecurity, and discussed the many causes of food insecurity. The discussions also touched on ways in which students could get involved. With older students, Lunch Break team members talked about youth homelessness. The discussion included dismantling preconceived notions of what homelessness looks like.

November 3 was Ranney’s second Panthers Against Hunger event. In November 2019, Ranney students, faculty, and parents packaged 16,000 meals to support Philabundance in Philadelphia.  This year, Ranney’s goal was to assemble 20,000 meals to support Lunch Break. Ranney once again partnered with Philadelphia-based Kids Against Hunger to purchase the meal ingredients and set up the assembly-line.

In conjunction with it’s Panthers Against Hunger event, Ranney’s student-led club RHOPE is coordinating a food drive for Lunch Break’s Client’s Choice pantry and also soliciting gifts to support Fulfill and Students Change Hunger.
