Two Student-Athletes Celebrate Collegiate Commitments

Ranney School students Charles Chropuvka ‘22 (Red Bank, NJ) and Sophia Zaslow ’22 (Holmdel, NJ) made their college choices official on Wednesday, November 10. Chropuvka will play baseball at the University of Delaware, while Zaslow will play tennis at Yale University.

Chropuvka was the 2019 Shore Conference batting average leader. Last season, he had six home runs, 30 RBI and 20 stolen bases.

“When choosing a school to play baseball as well as study, University of Delaware felt like the perfect fit,” said Chropuvka. “Something clicked when I met with Coach Sherman and Coach Prachniak. I believed in their vision and the future of the team. Those feelings were confirmed when I toured the state-of-the-art athletic facilities and campus. I am excited to study business and look forward to building success both on and off the field.”

“We are so proud of Charlie’s accomplishment of becoming the first player in Ranney Baseball history to move on to the NCA Division I level,” said Ranney Head Baseball Coach Pat Geroni. “This could not be more deserved and we look forward to hearing the noise he makes as a Blue Hen!”

Zaslow is ranked in the top-20 nationally and in the top three this year in New Jersey, she is also a Blue Chip Recruit. She has three ITA titles: NJ ITA Winter Circuit Champion, OH ITA Fall Circuit Champion, MI ITA Fall Circuit Champion. She is also an L4 USTA National Doubles Champion and Lexington SC ITF J4 Semifinalist.

“From the moment I picked up a tennis racquet, I was committed to pushing myself to be the very best student-athlete I could be and play tennis at the most competitive level academically and athletically,” said Zaslow. “Yale was always just an obvious choice. Yale will give me the opportunity to reach my full potential on the court and in the classroom. It’s where I know I belong and a dream come true.”

Zaslow is an AP Scholar with Distinction and projected as a member of the Cum Laude Society.

"It has been my privilege to work with Sophia over the past three years,” said Coach Gill Acosta from Garden State Tennis Academy. “She demonstrates a great tenacity in her commitment to her tennis training as well as her academic demands. I am always impressed by her balance and commitment to tennis and her ability to maintain her commitment to her academic studies. Her ability to maintain this balance is commendable and demonstrates a very strong work ethic.I know Sophia will be an asset to Yale."

“We are so proud to watch our student-athletes find the perfect fit to continue their academic and athletic journeys,” said Director of Athletics Natalie Gorman. “It has been a pleasure to watch Charlie and Sophia excel at their respective sports and we will be rooting for them loudly as they continue to follow their passions as collegiate student-athletes!”
