Ranney School Wins 2021-22 Students Change Hunger Heavyweight Champion Title

Ranney School was named the New Jersey State Champions and earned the Heavyweight Champion Award as the only school in the 6,000 pound club for Fulfill's 15th Annual Students Change Hunger Challenge.

Ranney was nominated for the state title after taking first place overall out of 70 schools in Monmouth and Ocean County, collecting more than 3,700 pounds of food for Lunch Break, and 1,700 pounds of food for Fulfill.
The winner was announced by Fulfill CEO and President Triada Stampas on a Zoom with the principal, teachers, and students.

This year marks Ranney’s third participating in the challenge. The Panthers won the Heavyweight title in 2019 and finished second overall in 2020.

Campus Activities to contribute to Ranney’s success included RHOPE’s waffle sundae bar, bracelet sales, bake sales, gift card raffle, and Pie a Teacher in the Face fundraiser, as well as the school-wide Panthers Against Hunger Day of Service. RHOPE also distributed shopping bags, sending one home with every student to encourage families to participate in the annual Fall Food Drive. RHOPE members participated in Fulfill’s Trunk or Treat, distributing candy and Halloween treats to clients in a drive-through event.

“Students Change Hunger competition is an incredible way to inspire students to fundraise and help families in need,” said RHOPE President Summer Wilderotter ’23. “Each dollar every school makes is another meal for an individual. When the schools of Monmouth and Ocean Counties come together to attempt to change hunger, we make an immense difference to many families who are not able to always put a meal on the table. We look forward to creating even more ways to raise greater profits for those around us and continue to make a substantial difference in the lives of many.”

Since the pandemic, the need for Fulfill’s services has increased by 22%, and they provide more than 972,000 meals each month.

The statewide competition was organized by the Federation of New Jersey Food Banks. The Federation challenged all students, staff, teachers, and parents to think of those less fortunate throughout the school year by organizing a food and fund drive at their school, which ran from September 13, 2021, through January 14, 2022. In Monmouth and Ocean Counties, 26 schools received awards for their exceptional efforts to feed food insecure neighbors.
