Chamber Music Hosts Music Therapy Session

The Chamber Music Club played for the kids from Shafia Crisis Stabilization and Assessment program in Lincroft, NJ, during a music therapy session. Music therapy incorporates techniques such as listening to, reflecting on, and creating music to improve a client's health and well-being.

Our repertoire consisted of arranged popular music from the 20th century, such as "Elanor Rigby" and "Somewhere".

Our guests enjoyed this session; one of them even tried their hands on a violin. It is our wish that our performance today would be long-lasting and that they will experience more benefits of music moving forward.

What is Music therapy?
Music therapy incorporates techniques such as listening to, reflecting on, and creating music to
improve a client’s health and well-being. Immersing people in music can allow them to more easily
express themselves, identify and process difficult experiences, develop social and communication skills
or find emotional release. Music therapy’s structured setting, activities and relationship can assist those
with Autism with their ability to communicate and socialize.

ABA and Music Therapy
Similar to ABA therapy, Music therapy has structure with a routine sequence of events, the youth
will have a clear beginning, middle and end. A visual schedule will be utilized during the session to help
the youth. Positive reinforcement will be utilized with the youth to encourage and promote the learning
of new skills. With this being the first session of music therapy, we will be working on new skills with the
youth. The youth will be able to mand or tact for a song or instrument which can assist with
verbal/nonverbal behavior.

Group Layout
This group will take place at Ranney School, a local private school 15 minutes away from Shafia
house. It will be run by Dr. Dorothy Sobieski, an experienced musician, conductor and orchestral teacher
who has her Doctorate in viola performance from Rutgers University. Dr. Sobieski has experience
working with children of all ages, individuals on the spectrum and has experience with music therapy.
The group will consist of the youth being able to listen to a group of individuals perform three pieces of
music, education on instruments used in the orchestra, the opportunity to try each instrument and the
ability to ask questions.
