Science Competition Club Competes in Olympiad

On Saturday, December 3, fourteen members of the Science Competition Club competed against 75 other high schools in the 2nd Annual Virtual Dick Smith Memorial Science Olympiad tournament:  Maya Barthwal ‘23,  Priya Gupta ‘23, Noah Goodman ‘23, Anna Weiner ‘23, Justin Atnes ‘24, Hendrix Wang ‘25, Cole Serrapica ‘25,  Brandon Stobie ‘23, Michael Guiliano ‘23, Caitlyn Chu ‘25, Micah Seiler ‘25; Thea Yang ‘24, Scott Huang ’24, Ankush Govil ‘23. (And for an added degree of difficulty, many of these students went on to perform in the play that evening!)

Working individually and in pairs, these students competed in 13 events ranging from Astronomy to Ichthyology. Anna competed in 4 events and placed 5th overall in Forensics, her favorite event. In addition, Ranney had several top-25 placings:  Maya and Priya ranked 14th in Ichthyology, Ankush was 25th in Disease Detectives, Anna and Hendrix were 24th in Cell Biology, and Brandon and Michael placed 24th in Fermi Questions.

No matter where students placed, all participants earned points toward the overall team score. "This was an excellent warm-up for the Science Olympiad team as they prepare for the New Jersey Regional Science Olympiad in January," said Dr. Roxanne Spencer, Science Department Chair and Science Olympiad Advisor.
