Middle School Students Participate in Listen Up Program

On Thursday, March 9, four 7th grade students and eight 8th grade students from Ranney attended the Listen Up Program at the Arts Council in Princeton.

Students met composer William Harvey to hear about the background of his pieces prior to the World Premiere on Saturday.  They worked with an artist named April Zay who guided them in interpretation.

On Saturday, Mrs. Swiatocha and Mrs. McCarthy will meet students at Richardson Auditorium to listen to the symphony.  Mrs. McCarthy will mentor her students in a piece of art they produce in response to the concert.  Mrs. Swiatocha will mentor students in a piece of poetry in response to the concert.

On Saturday, May 13, their artwork and writing will be unveiled at Richardson Auditorium and on May 16 there will be an exhibit and reception at the Arts Council in Princeton, and this will be on display through June 6.

William Harvey's piece is about "Seven Decisions of Gandhi."  He researched his life and was inspired to create a piece about it.  For instance, at one point, Gandhi contemplated becoming a professional violinist.  What would the world look like if he had followed up on that decision?

The other piece was called "Connecting Again," and is about reuniting after the COVID-19 lockdown.
