Q&A with Golfer John Welch '24

Can you talk about what it means to the team to place third at the Monmouth County Tournament?
I think placing 3rd at the Monmouth County Tournament is a great accomplishment. We also had two individualists placed inside the top 10 out of 115 golfers. Sam Landers ‘26 shot the lowest score out of any freshman in the tournament. (78) For the only team in the county to not include any seniors, I truly believe we have the brightest future out of any team in the Shore Conference.

What were your goals (both personal and team) coming into the season?
I wanted to improve my tournament scores from last year. I definitely saw improvement at the county tournament moving up 11 spots from last year to this year. As for the team, we wanted to defend our Non-Public B South Sectional Championship and win the Non-Public B state championship.

How would you describe the personality of the team?
The personality of the team is great. The long van rides to the courses are always a blast and being able to communicate with my teammates is a great resource.

How would you describe your coach and how he has helped the players?
Coach Butler and Coach Ryan have helped the team tremendously. Their communication with other schools to schedule matches at beautiful courses has prepared us for the big events. Their leadership qualities on and off the course have given us confidence prior to every match.

What is your favorite memory so far this season?
I would say my favorite memory is shooting a bogey-free 35 in a match at Hollywood. Being able to not make a bogey for 9 holes was a huge confidence booster for me moving forward.

To what do you attribute the team's success, going 13-1 so far this season?
Being able to stay consistent has been the biggest reason why we are 13-1 so far this season. We have consistently been shooting around the same scores in matches and tournaments and that has allowed us to beat teams that have a larger dispersion in their scores.

What has been your favorite course to play on?
Somerset Hills has been my favorite course. It is such a treat to play the #50 ranked course in the United States.
