Career Day Opens Students’ Eyes to Opportunities Ahead

Ranney School alums shared their areas of expertise with Upper School students as part of Career Day on April 29, 2017. Students in grades 9-12 had the opportunity to attend three different career path sessions, ranging from law, finance, and medicine to TV production, web development, and marketing.

Kicking off the event was Keynote Speaker Vin Gopal, Ranney Class of 2003. The Penn State grad currently runs a local marketing and communications firm and has been active on the Monmouth County political scene. He spoke to students about the advantages and disadvantages of entrepreneurship, such as having flexibility but also taking on long hours and a lot of responsibility. He also shared how the relationship building skills he learned at Ranney have carried over to his self-started business, where client building and management are crucial. Listen to more about the advantages of attending an independent school like Ranney from Vin in this video clip: https://youtu.be/-Vf7POM44WU. Vin also recently spoke to Ranney about his run for New Jersey State Senate (back story).

The Class of 2002’s Dr. Sheila Sahni was one of several doctors participating in Ranney’s Career Day. She covered the field of cardiology, including what’s involved in a residency and the pressures, both internal and external, that can come with such a career choice. Dr. Sahni is currently an interventional cardiology fellow at UCLA and works with multiple hospitals in the Los Angeles area. “It was wonderful to see so many of our successful alums come back to campus and share what they’ve learned in the real world with our current students,” said Alumni Relations Director Tom Moriau. “Their expertise, not only in their industry, but also in terms of how they adjusted to college and work life is of great interest and help to our soon-to-be graduates.”
