Alexandra Greenberg Attends Summer Leadership Conference

Alexandra Greenberg ’19 shares her summer experience at the HOBY Leadership Program:

The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation of New Jersey is a part of a national organization, also known as HOBY. In New Jersey, HOBY trains over 300 high school sophomores annually in the study of leadership on the personal, team, and community levels. The goal of attending a HOBY conference is for students to take what they learned from the conference and create a positive change in their community. I was fortunate enough to be chosen as an ambassador to represent Ranney School at the 2017 HOBY conference in late June at Kean University.

At the conference, I was able to learn new leadership skills, listen to influential speakers, and make new friends. When the conference started, we were placed into groups of six to seven students that we spent the majority of our time with throughout the conference. Each group was run by a facilitator who attended the HOBY conference when they were a sophomore in high school. While in our groups, we played games requiring teamwork, worked on team building, and overall, had a lot of fun.

Although everyone in my group had different personalities, we all had the same goal: to be leaders in our communities. The speakers focused on a range of topics, some of which included their nonprofit organizations and leadership skills. I enjoyed hearing from a panel of young individuals who have all made a difference in their communities. I also had the opportunity to interview one of the speakers, Mr. Joel Payne, and introduce him at the conference. Mr. Payne is a vice president at a public relations firm located in Washington D.C. Prior to this, Mr. Payne worked with members of Congress. He spoke to us about overcoming obstacles in order to reach our goals and encouraged us to address our failures to make sure we do not repeat them.

One of the many highlights of the conference was when we created fleece blankets for Project Linus, a nonprofit organization that provides homemade blankets to children in need. My group alone created 22 blankets.

Overall, attending the HOBY conference was a great experience that I will never forget. I would like to thank Ranney and Dr. Accrocco in the College Counseling Office for helping me to find this opportunity! I look forward to participating in the HOBY program in the future and continuing to make a difference in my community.
