New Coaches to Grow Girls’ Basketball Program

Ranney School has hired Lawrence Schuler as its new Assistant Athletic Director and Varsity Girls’ Basketball Head Coach, to begin with the 2017-18 school year. Schuler earned his B.A. and M.A. from Princeton, where he directed the university’s women’s soccer elite/ID camp and served as the graduate assistant and manager of the men’s basketball program. He helped the Princeton’s men’s team qualify for an NCAA tournament and win the Ivy League title.

Schuler also previously served as the Assistant Coach for Men’s Basketball at Sarah Lawrence College and as the JV/Varsity Basketball Coach for Monmouth Regional High, where he helped to improve the freshman program record.  Schuler will be assisted by Ranney Upper School faculty member Christine Cicero, who previously coached the school’s crew and basketball teams. Cicero was a member of the powerhouse Girls’ Basketball program at St. John Vianney winning both a State and Shore Conference Championship during her high school days, before she joined the Holy Cross Crew team as a collegiate athlete. Ranney’s second assistant Varsity Girls’ Basketball coach will be Jim Lane, who previously served as the Varsity Boys’ Assistant Coach at the Patrick School and was a four-time Ivy League Champion on the Men's Basketball team at Princeton; both he and Schuler were led by Hall of Fame Head Coach Pete Carril.

“Lawrence has a very complete team in Coach Cicero and Coach Lane, with all three bringing a wide range of basketball experience to our girls’ basketball program at Ranney,” said Athletic Director Natalie Gorman, who began her Ranney tenure on June 1. “Lawrence received high praise from each program he has been a part of, and I am very lucky to have him join my staff.”

Basketball is one of 15 sports offered at Ranney. The school’s Varsity Girls’ Basketball team was coached by Mr. Tom Moriau of Toms River between 2001 and 2017. In 2015, Moriau was recognized by the New Jersey Athletic Directors Association and named the Shore Conference B-Central Division Coach of the Year. He will be honored during the 2017-18 basketball season for his many years of service to the basketball and athletic program, and to Ranney School overall. Said Gorman, “We would like to thank Tom Moriau for his years of dedication to build our Girls’ Basketball program. Coach Moriau served our athletic, alumni, and school community through leadership positions for nearly three decades, and his love for athletics was evident in his commitment to helping every athlete excel on and off the field. We are sincerely grateful to Coach Moriau for the impact he made on the girls’ basketball program and know he will remain a Ranney Panther for life."
Ranney’s Varsity Boys’ Basketball team, coached by Tahj Holden, had a 22-5 record last season, making it to both the Shore Conference and State Sectional Tournament semifinals.

“It is a very exciting time to be a Ranney Panther, and we are all eagerly anticipating the 2017-2018 sports seasons,” said Gorman.
