Ranney Community Adds Mindfulness to the Mix

Digital apps like Headspace and Calm have had more than 19 million downloads combined, and as the world takes a moment to step into mindfulness, teachers at Ranney School are doing the same. This year, Upper School Speech and Theatre Arts Teacher John Doyle will be leading the faculty and student community in a path toward meditation and well-being.

Trained as a Reiki Master by the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies and as a Vibrational Sound Therapist by the Vibrational Sound Association, Mr. Doyle will be offering weekly 25-minute mindfulness sessions for interested community members (one for teachers and one for students) before the school day begins. He will also be hosting monthly Sound Baths, in which Himalayan bowls and other meditative instruments will guide individuals through a peaceful state.

“Beginning the day with meditation allows us to better face any challenges that may arise,” explains Mr. Doyle. “Less stress allows us be better individuals.”

It’s no secret that faculty and students alike start every school year with a great deal of energy—energy that can tend to wane as homework, assessments, and social schedules take their toll. Mindfulness—even once a week—provides the opportunity to acknowledge, move through, and, ideally, to let go of daily stresses.

“Learning how to meditate and making it part of our daily habits helps us to be more focused and organized, and better able to handle stress and anxiety,” explains Mr. Doyle. “Among students, studies have shown that meditation supports improved behavior, easier test taking, stronger grades, and growth in personal interactions. Teachers benefit by having a tool to help cope with challenging schedules and the everyday interactions of the school day. Meditation is like working out – you notice the benefits very quickly, and with constant practice, those benefits increase.”
