An alliance of three Ranney Robotics teams (A, M and F) won a competition held at Ranney on Sunday, Jan. 14.
Team A: Chris Glenn, Chip Johnson, Kayla Shah
Team M: Rylan Foy, Kevin Yu, Connie Hall, Mike Zheng
Team F: Brooke Schmelz, Lara Chu, Zining Wang

Overall, six Ranney teams competed, along with 13 teams from other New Jersey schools. In addition to Teams A, M and F, Ranney teams C, D and P competed.

Team C: Alex Klatsky, Sandy Wilderotter, Rohan Sharma, Luke Denver-Moore
Team D: Jacob Guss, Andrew Denton, Ryan Lubin, Jack Bacher
Team P: Anthony Virone, Seth Marx, Katie Peardon

The M team (Rylan Foy, Kevin Yu, Connie Hall, Mike Zheng) won an Amaze award for a robot with an autonomous program that worked every time, and for being the only robot who was undefeated for the entire competition.

The all-female, all-freshmen F team (Brooke Schmelz, Lara Chu, Zining Wang) won a Judges Award for a quality interview and engineering notebook and strong on-field performance. "This was only their second competition ever, and it's unusual to win an award this soon in a competitive career," said Ms. Chiara Shah, Robotics adviser.

Three Ranney alumni returned to campus and volunteered as judges: Vasilios Nicholas class of 2015 (currently at Johns Hopkins), Will Zheng class of 2017 (Stevens) and Dana Schioppo class of 2017 (Stevens).

Four Ranney teams (A, F, G, M) have qualified for States, which will be held on Feb. 24 at Cherry Hill East.  Those four teams have also qualified for and will be attending Nationals April 4 through 8 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
