Robotics Has Impressive Showing at Nationals

The Ranney Robotics students performed spectacularly at the CREATE US Open against 200 teams from the US, Canada, and China last week. The M team (Rylan Foy, Kevin Yu, and Mike Zheng) won the red division and advanced to the finals against the winner of the black division. They lost by one point in the third match of a best-of-three series.

“Last year they lost in the semifinals of their division, so we did even better than ever before,” said Chiara Shah, Robotics advisor. “We beat so many amazing robots. We feel so good going into worlds in two weeks.”

The A team (Gerald “Chip” Johnson, Chris Glenn, and Kayla Shah) competed in a special division called the open division where robots are allowed to use non VEX parts. They finished 20th out of 63 robots in the qualifying rounds and were picked by a great alliance for the finals. They lost in quarterfinals but earned an award called the “Bracket Buster” for being the lowest ranked alliance to beat a higher ranked alliance.

The other two teams, G (Anthony Virone and Katie Peardon) and F (Brooke Schmeltz, Lara Chu, and Zining “Charlotte” Wang) performed admirably and learned a lot.

“These teams are freshman and sophomores and I think they were inspired by the high level of competition they saw from our juniors and seniors,” said Mrs. Shah. “I know that in future years they will take what they learned from this experience and improve and become leaders in this program.”
