Student-Athlete Spotlight: Anna Effenberger

What grade did you start at Ranney School?
I came in 6th grade, left for 7th and 8th, and came back in 9th grade.

How long have you been playing golf?

Ever since I was little, my mom would take my sister and I to a driving range to hit. She always stressed how it would be a valuable activity that I could do for my entire life, but I honestly hated going to the range. I thought I would never enjoy golf. My sister, who is four years older than me, was a golfer on Colts Neck’s team, and eventually I started going to our local driving range at Colts Neck in the summers with her. I started enjoying golf, and I started focusing and competitively playing during the summer before 9th grade.

How often do you play golf?
During the school year, I try to play as often as I can. Whenever it is not raining, I go to the course at least on the weekends. Last summer, I started playing in junior NJPGA tournaments, which was great experience.

What are your goals as a golfer?
I'd like to continue playing in college (recreationally) and throughout my life.

What is your favorite subject at Ranney?
I really enjoy math and science, especially physics, but I also really love art and have started having my work in exhibitions and selling it.

Who is your favorite teacher?
Ms. Shipley. She's helped me grow not only as an artist and come back from rejections (art is very subjective) but as a young adult too.

What professional golfer do you admire most?
Michelle Wie. She’s come back again and again from injuries and has never lost her passion and drive.

Fun Facts: Favorite Food? Least Favorite Food?
Favorite: Raspberries.
Least: raw tomatoes (but cooked is fine)

Tell us something we don’t know about you: I used to dance.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?
This summer, while I’m looking forward to the warm weather and paying golf more often, I'm going to be extremely busy with college applications, tennis in the fall, and other summer programs.

I'm most looking forward to Governor's School (in engineering and technology), a residential program at Rutgers, as it will be a great opportunity to gain hands on experience and make relationships with fellow rising seniors and people in the industry.
