Ranney School Announces 2018-19 Faculty Additions

Ranney School Head of School Dr. John Griffith has announced energetic new educators that will be joining the dedicated and passionate Ranney faculty this year.

Ms. Caryn Blum joins Ranney as Lower School Art educator. Ms. Blum is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and Seton Hall, where she earned degrees in both Fine Arts and Education. “With her developmental understanding of children and belief in their creative spirit, she was the natural selection to continue the outstanding program developed by retired teacher, Mrs. Barbara Levine,” said Head of Lower School Dr. Andrea Danial.

Upon Pamela Shipley’s retirement, Ms. Marilyn Casey will serve as Upper School Visual Arts teacher. An educator with roots in Monmouth and Ocean counties and the New York metro area, Ms. Casey earned a B.A. and an M.A. in arts education (SUNY New Paltz and CUNY respectively). “Having experience in both public education and in museum education programs throughout New York City, Ms. Casey has an interesting perspective on not only the role of the arts in our lives, but also how arts education is a critical piece of each child's education,” said Dr. Greg Martin, Ranney School Upper School Head and Associate Head of School.

Mr. Morgan Einbinder will be teaching Middle School science, while also teaching Marine Science and Ecology in the Upper School. He is certified and has extensive experience in teaching biology and life science. He has taught environmental science, and has experience at both the Middle and Upper School levels. “Like so many independent school educators, Mr. Einbinder brings a wealth of experiences to the table in terms of his ability to teach and mentor students,” said Dr. Martin.

Mr. Jim Gill, another educator with deep roots in Monmouth and Ocean counties, will be teaching Upper School Computer Science and Robotics. Mr. Gill has taught math and computer science at Freehold High School for almost forty years. He earned a B.S. in math from Seton Hall and additional degrees in Computer Science from both Brookdale and NJIT. “During Mr. Gill's demo lesson, we had a clear sense that his mastery of computer science is incredible,” said Dr. Martin. “He was also able to make immediate connections with our students and make the material engaging.”

Dr. Roxanne Spencer, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University, joins Ranney from the Princeton International School of Mathematics and Science, where she taught chemistry and served as the STEAM coordinator for four years. As the Science Department Chair, Dr. Spencer will help guide the science department into the future, building on the launch of the STEAM certificate and Physics First, helping to promote an entrepreneurial spirit and mentality and mentor students through research in the sciences. “Dr. Spencer has extensive experience in and success with programming authentic science research into the curriculum, which will be a great benefit to our Capstone students looking to explore science research,” said Dr. Martin. “She also has experience in the industry and has led several entrepreneurial programs.”

There are also some current faculty roles transitioning for the 2018-19 school year. Ms. Marie Curry, who has been at Ranney for 11 years, will be serving as the Upper School's Dean of Academics. Ms. Curry worked as the Dean of Faculty at her previous school, experience that will inform how she helps a faculty professional development program and continue to help the Ranney School faculty meet their own goals and grow as educators.

Mr. Adam Materasso, who has been part of the Ranney community for 15 years, transitions into a role as the Director of College Counseling and Student Support and will have oversight of the college counseling team and the student support staff members.

In her second year at Ranney School, Ms. Natalie Minichino is expanding her role in Student Support in Middle School to enhance the Social/Emotional Learning in Lower School as the School Counselor. Former substitute and coach Mr. Joe Spernal will be Athletics Coordinator, supporting the Athletic Department, US Health and Physical Education programs. In the Lower School, Ms. Sue Keenan, who has been at Ranney for eight years, and Ms. Janine Mitreuter, who has been at Ranney for 19 years, will be the new third grade team.

“Our passionate and caring faculty members are what make Ranney such a special place for the students, and we are grateful to be adding teachers and roles that can further our mission and culture in all the right ways,” said Dr. Griffith.
