Middle School Debate Team Competes in First Tournament
This past weekend, the Ranney Middle School Debate Team took part in its first tournament at Barkalow Middle School in Freehold. Other participating schools were Barkalow, Rumson Country Day, and Forrestdale.
The topics were:
- Lower the voting age to 16
- Social media is good for democracy
- Banning plastic straws does more harm than good.
Ranney fielded three teams: Desmond Pepe, Lucas Yanney, and Ethan Bodner (all grade 6); Rowan Johnson (grade 8) and Lindsay Berliner (grade 7); and Ankush Govil (grade 8), Brandon Stobie (grade 8), and Crosby Collins (grade 7).
The debate team won the following awards: 2nd place school, number of wins; tied for 2nd place school, percentage of wins.
Rowan Johnson won top speaker for Ranney and, along with Lindsay Berliner, won second place team overall.
