Seven Ranney Students Recognized in the 2027 National Merit® Scholarship Program

Ranney School is proud to announce that seven members of its senior class have been recognized in the 72nd annual National Merit® Scholarship Program. Senior Winston Garcia ‘27 has been named a National Merit Semifinalist, while six Ranney School seniors were honored as Commended Students:

  • Benjamin Gimbel ‘27
  • Kevin Oliverie ‘27
  • Avi Rao ‘27
  • Adan Said ‘27
  • Minghe “Jason” Xue ‘27
Garcia is among more than 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. These academically talented students entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screening. Garcia now has the opportunity to continue in the competition for nearly 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $24 million, which will be awarded in the spring of 2027.

Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 of more than 1.2 million students who entered the competition across the country. They are recognized for their exceptional academic promise and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

To advance to the Finalist level, Semifinalists must present an outstanding high school academic record, receive an endorsement and recommendation from a school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores confirming their earlier qualifying test performance. Finalists will be notified of their standing in February 2027, with National Merit Scholarship winners announced in four nationwide releases beginning in April 2027.
