Middle School Debate Club

The Middle School Debate Club is getting ready for their first debates of the 2023-2024 school year hosted by the Jersey Shore Debate League. The debates will take place on February 24th at Knollwood School in Fair Haven. Some students in the club have prior debate experience, and others are new members. In an effort to provide support and coaching, the club optimized one of the many great things about Ranney School: a campus with students from Beginners to 12th grade! "Our school population allows for collaboration across divisions, and we had a terrific opportunity to leverage this advantage," said advisor Mrs. Minichino.

During the club's recent activity period, they were delighted be joined by Lindsay Berliner '24, a senior and co-captain of the US Debate Club. Lindsay has been part of Ranney's Debate community since 6th grade and is a certified debate judge with the Jersey Shore Debate League. Lindsay worked with the Middle School students on developing assertions, reasoning, and evidence for their debates on whether America should abolish the penny. She also shared how to find reliable sources and emphasized the importance of scoring points at each stage of the debate.

The Middle School students have received four debate topics in advance of the February 24th event. They must prepare arguments for both the proposition and opposition positions on each topic. In a few weeks, Lindsay will return to act as a judge in a mock debate. She will provide feedback and guidance to the student debaters, helping them improve before the main event.

Mrs. Swiatocha and Mrs. Minichino have been working to help students learn about debate and why it is important and relevant in today’s world. If you’d like to learn more, please email Mrs. Minichino at nminichino@ranneyschool.org.
