Welcome to Middle School

Welcome to our Middle School (Grades 6-8)

The Middle School years mark an important journey for young students, as they work toward developing the skills needed for advanced academic work. Mindful of age-appropriate development, however, it is imperative that the adolescent learner have an outlet to develop those skills in an innovative and dynamic classroom setting.

Middle School students thrive when challenged and excel when they are asked to think creatively. They seek out structured opportunities for adventure and discovery, while still yearning for room to play freely. They also crave the freedom to work independently, yet they collaborate willingly and without hesitation. In the midst of this dynamic period of development, Ranney Middle School provides a supportive environment for students to navigate these evolving academic and emotional characteristics. It is our objective to harness this energy and enthusiasm for learning, in order to foster a passion for growth and knowledge that will be the foundation for Upper School success.

The dedicated and experienced faculty of our Middle School believe strongly in the value of partnering with our families. We accomplish this through a student-centered, collaborative approach to educating the whole child. We seek outcomes that are academically challenging, while keeping in mind the importance of family, extracurricular passions and adolescent maturation. We promote the skills necessary for positive student-teacher relationships, both inside the academic classroom and through our advisory system. Our goal is to inspire students to engage in the learning process without a fear of outcomes, all the while building meaningful relationships with their peers, faculty and staff.

We welcome you to inquire further about what we do in the Middle School and encourage you to join us for a visit!

Our Approach

Ranney’s Middle School offers an academically rigorous environment with an intentional support system designed to help students work through challenges, in and out of the classroom, as they prepare for Upper School. Through small class sizes, a daily advisory program, character education, and extensive extra-curricular offerings, our students have a safe environment to challenge themselves each and every day. Our faculty builds lasting relationships with students by serving as advisors, coaches, and activity leaders, providing direction and stability that promote student achievement during adolescence

Ranney’s curriculum is structured, and our integrated/interdisciplinary approach addresses the needs of every student at all levels of ability, helping to build confidence. We work with each child to develop and define their academic strengths and social skills, assisting them as they grow and mature into students with a love for learning, and addressing the concept that adolescent minds are challenged and strengthened by application, rather than recitation or repetition.

Our Advisory Program pairs each student with a single teacher, with whom they meet two times each school day. Advisors offer parents a partner and contact to work through academic and social/emotional concerns or overall development. Our advisors highlight and reinforce Character Education in the division through the Citizens of the Month Program as well as through themed dialogues, role play, and case studies surrounding the values within our Honor Code, such as respect, tolerance, responsibility, honesty, accountability, and trustworthiness.
