Ranney Middle School Debate Team Attends First Meet

On Saturday, February 24, the Ranney Middle School Debate Team attended its first meet of the year at Knollwood School in Fair Haven, going head-to-head with students from Shrewsbury School, Knollwood, and Bakalow MS (Freehold).

Team members Marisa Engel '29, Aidan Grinbukh '29, Katya Grinbukh '29, Lily LiCausi '29, and Jackson Olmstead '29 prepared for weeks during the Winter Activities period researching and preparing speeches for the assigned debate topics. The students had to be prepared to debate either side of the argument on abolishing the penny, adopting the metric system, high school students signing Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) contracts, and shifting Presidential Primaries to a single day.

"The Ranney team did well in their first showing, earning praise from judges on their well-cited source materials, solid public speaking skills, and strong arguments for their topics," said Advisor Mrs. Minichino.

They notched a win as the proposition in support of America adopting the metric system, and Lily LiCausi came away with the award for top debater from Ranney School. Judge Jessica Picciano said that Lily was "...a strong speaker who set her team up for success" and that she provided a solid rebuttal refuting the opposition's arguments.

Congratulations to the debaters on a wonderful day, and many thanks to parents and families for their support! The team's next debate will be on May 4th at Barkalow Middle School.
