Performing Arts & Physics Lessons Combined in Boardwalk Hall Visit

More than 60 Upper School students engaged in both Ranney performing arts and physics programs visited the Boardwalk Hall organ landmark earlier this week. The largest organ of its kind in the world is in the process of being restored. Students received a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic restoration, including a visit to the staff workshop and the organ rooms where some of the 33,000 pipes and related instrument pieces are mounted at the hall's Atlantic City location.

Following the guided tour, Ranney students in the orchestra and chorus performed a few pieces with the staff organist, Steven Ball, for a public audience. (Just before leaving the boardwalk, the chorus did a flash mob performance in the outside bandshell.)

“The goal of the trip was to better understand the blend of science, engineering, instrument design, and creativity involved in the example of a (very large) pipe organ,” explained Physics Teacher Matt D’Amato. “We also measured the sound from the organ at one point during the performance.”
