Fabio Tessiore Selected for NJ Scholars Program

Ranney School junior Fabio Tessiore was selected to participate in the New Jersey Scholars Program this summer. The New Jersey Scholars Program is a tuition-free, five-week summer program for students who are residents of New Jersey, United States citizens and rising seniors at the high school level in New Jersey.

Each school is permitted to submit up to two applications and the process is coordinated by the Director of Guidance. Applicants write essays, submit a paper written for a class, a letter of recommendation and a transcript of their grades. If selected as a semifinalist, applicants are invited to participate in a group interview with NJSP. The Program selects thirty-nine Scholars from among the semifinalists.

I am very excited to attend the program because it will be an environment that I foresee will not be very common in my future life,” said Fabio. “I do not intend so much that there won't be groups of passionate individuals in the future, but that this program will be a time to talk with passionate people while not having many other things in the background to do and worry about, like how I expect college will be.”

“This year's topic on The Mind and Body: The Future of Being Human is something that I'm very interested in. I look forward to listening to the professors' ideas of the future because they have lived through more change than a 17-year-old.”

The mission of the New Jersey Scholars Program is to reach out to able and enthusiastic students who come from a broad cross-section of the state’s population. The program creates an intense, interdisciplinary intellectual experience that will change students’ lives by teaching them to think in a new way — relating disciplines instead of dividing them. Scholars participate in lectures and small-group seminars where they actively engage with the disciplines. They also have extensive reading assignments, and pursue research at world class libraries and museums. They write essays and work closely with a faculty member to produce a 10-15 page interdisciplinary research paper. They are also stretched as they hone their creative talents in art, music, writing, drama and public speaking by contributing to an Arts Festival that is thematically related to the Program topic.

“Meeting new people first hand is also the best way to learn new things and ways to think,” said Fabio. “The group this summer will be very diverse and from all parts of New Jersey. Since there will be people from many different schools, I hope there is something I can learn from someone that I can bring to Ranney. Overall, the program will be something new to experience and to learn from and I hope to get a broadened sense of the topic and life in general. Thank you again to all my teachers that helped me prepare for this.
