Modern Conflicts Class Applies Lessons of History to Art

Students in the Upper School Modern Conflicts class have been studying various genocides throughout the world this fall. “They have learned not only about the genocide and history of the cultures and civilizations involved, but also about the importance of remembering and memorializing such events so that history does not forget these tragedies,” explains History Teacher Chris Payne.
Students created their own genocide memorials, using artistic symbolism and their knowledge of the history of the events to appropriately memorialize these events. They drew on symbolism from other war memorials and related events throughout the world to gather inspiration. Aside from the various, hand-made, memorials, students also had the ability and opportunity to use Minecraft to build more complete, distinct, and imaginative structures.
