Artists Talks with Seventh Grade Students

Mr. John Tarka, a graffiti artist and educator from Pittsburgh, virtually met with seventh grade students recently to talk about Graffiti Art. Mr. Tarka honed his graffiti skills beginning in middle school and is a sought after artist for businesses, non-profits and individuals.

He shared the history, ethical dilemmas and creative responsibility of graffiti art.  His 'tag' Tenax is from the Latin phrase tenax propositi, meaning steadfast or tenacious in purpose.  As an educator, that phrase resonated with him.  A former teacher and Principal, Mr. Tarka currently works as the Assistant Superintendent of the Connecticut Department of Children and Family Services.

As a follow up to the discussion, seventh grade students will make their own "tags" for a name card they will place on their lockers.
