Ethics in Literature Class Hosts Visiting Author

Dr. Martone’s Ethics in Literature class just finished reading Accomplice, the fictional story of two high school students that stage a fake abduction to improve their chances of getting into good colleges. After completing the book, English Department Chair Mr. Felter arranged for author Eireann Corrigan to visit yesterday’s class to talk with them about the book.

“I've loved visiting Dr. Martone's class-- both in person and virtually,” said Corrigan. “It's clear to me that Ranney students read critically and attentively because they ask such thoughtful questions. As an author, I feel honored to have readers that consider my characters with empathy and insight.”

Corrigan is the author of the novels Accomplice, Ordinary Ghosts, and Splintering, as well as the poetry memoir, You Remind Me of You. She is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and New York University.

“The virtual chat with Eireann Corrigan was great!” said Victoria Gualario ’20. “As students in a literature based class, it was great to be able to talk to an author about what it was like to write and publish a book. The Q&A was a great way for us to understand how and why the characters in the book made certain decisions and how those decisions influenced the plot.”

“We are so lucky to be able to connect online at this time,” said Corrigan. “In some ways, a virtual visit feels even more personal. After all, readers have never seen my living room before! It also puts us more on equal footing. Instead of lecturing to students, Dr. Martone and I had the opportunity to hear each of their questions individually. That seemed more direct to me and I appreciated the experience immensely.”

"Even though our experience was clouded by the distance learning aspect of it, Dr. Martone was able to make the experience worthwhile and rewarding," said Trent Redman '21.  "Mrs. Corrigan was an absolute pleasure to listen to and hear about her writing process in the book Accomplice. Taking away from what she expressed to us as a class shows that she puts hard work and dedication to her craft in more ways than one. I was beyond satisfied with her answers and was even opened up to different perspectives I did not notice beforehand. Thank you to Eireann Corrigan for taking the time to chat with us."
