US Spanish Students Submit Creative Mid-Term Projects

Spanish 4:
The Spanish 4 Honors class made videos in the vein of El Gran Hotel, a soap opera that is set in 1905.

During the quarter, for homework and in class, the students viewed episodes, created vocabulary lists, had discussions about cultural sameness/differences and the sameness/differences in 1905 vs modern life. They analyzed the characters and worked on using the vocabulary to better express themselves in Spanish. The class also discussed the importance of letter writing and worked on writing letters in class among the characters.

For the midterm video they worked on writing letters to each other that discussed and resolved a problem. The students turned in all the letters together and in the order of the correspondence and created videos reading and acting out their letters.

Below are some sample videos:

Thomas & Anthony

Samantha & Olivia

Ava, Layla & Melanie

Spanish 2:
Spanish 2 Honors students were researchers, script writers and experts in the kitchen for their midterms! After familiarizing themselves with food vocabulary and reading about the food pyramid, they researched an authentic Latin dish from a Spanish-speaking country, wrote a script for a video teaching a friend how to cook the dish, then created videos for their friend all about their dish and how to prepare it- all in the target language.

In the videos, they use grammar that we have been working with this semester such as the present tense and the informal commands as well as learned vocabulary from this semester. Their videos include information on where the dish is eaten, the ingredients, the steps to the recipe, information on the recipe's nutritional value and any other interesting information they found about the recipe!
French 2:
The French II midterm project involved using vocabulary related to amusement parks. The students needed to use regular and irregular verbs in the present, as well as other grammar studied this semester in French.

Spanish 5:
In Spanish 5, Joey Arege ’22 changed the ending to the movie "Pan's Labyrinth". He had to write a letter of rebellion and change an important part of the movie that would change the overall outcome.

Spanish 3:
As part of their Midterm project, students in Spanish 3 Honors investigated architectural and cultural sites in Spanish-speaking countries. Watch Grace Bray, Crosby Collins, Priya Gupta, and Camaryn Barbanel present on virtual trips they took to Chile, Ecuador, Spain and Peru, respectively.

In the videos they use grammar that we have been working with this semester such as the present tense and past tenses, as well as learned vocabulary from this semester. Their videos include information on the landscape, lodging, weather, cultural activities, history and even problems they encountered while traveling.
