Lower School Service Learning

In Lower School, we share with students the values and skills of kindness, engagement, agency, and empathy that are essential to negotiating this world. We grow the muscles of empathy and enhance our children’s identity as powerful individuals who want, can, and need to make a difference. With this focus on community engagement, we are teaching students, through experience, how rewarding it is to focus on global citizenship.

In a recent project, the Lower School worked with Upper School Faculty member Dr. Delgado’s Global Citizenship class on the Welcoming Refugees project. Using art as a powerful tool to bridge people together, students created postcards to welcome people displaced by war and other crises.

The Bezos Family Foundation donates $5 to refugee-aid organizations for every postcard created, so students will see the difference they’re making firsthand.

Some of the skills that this project helped Lower School students hone were:
  • Project solving
  • Collaboration
  • Taking artistic risks
  • Persistence on a project
