Jr. Tri-M Collaborates with Opportunity Music Project

Ranney Middle School Junior Jr. TRI-M Music Honor Society Chapter 4410 has been working to sponsor music students from the non-profit charity Opportunity Music Project. This initiative began as a service project that started during the 20221-22 school year. The Jr. TRI-M students have worked to raise money through the 2022-23 school year to sponsor 19 students in 2022 and 23 students in 2023.

The Opportunity Music Project works to bring quality music education to students in New York City that would not otherwise be able to afford music education by supplying lessons, instruments, and membership to an age-level-appropriate string orchestra. These students are held accountable to practice, and their parents must be involved in their learning and fundamental lessons to ensure that they are consistently practicing.

Ranney Jr. TRI-M students have traveled two times to the Opportunity Music Project rehearsals in New York City at St. Michaels Church on two occasions. A combined rehearsal was held in NYC on April 16th for five Ranney Orchestra members, sponsored OMP students, and Jr. TRI-M Chapter 4410 Sponsor Mr. John Propper, Ranney Performing Arts Department Chair, who conducted it. The rehearsal was a success, and the Junior TRI-M students are working to bring these sponsored students to the Ranney Middle School Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 16th.   The Ranney Middle School and the OMP students will perform "The William Tell Overture" by Giacchino Rossini, arranged by Miskovic and Cline.

"Jr. TRI-M Chapter 4410 has worked diligently to cultivate the relationship between Ranney Middle School and The Opportunity Music Project," said Mr. Propper. "We have held multiple fundraisers that have allowed our chapter to sponsor 23 students for this year. We are so proud to be able to enable these students to cultivate a love of music through lessons and ensemble study. Our yearly fundraisers, such as the Fall and Spring Coffeehouses, Candygrams, Pennywars, and the Winter Dance, have raised thousands of dollars to allow us to commit to this heartfelt and artistic charity. We look forward to bringing some of our sponsored students to the Ranney campus to perform alongside our Middle School Orchestra on May 16th."

Ranney School Jr. TRI-M is a service organization that includes music students from grades 7 & 8 who have met criteria involving ensemble membership (Ranney Middle School Band, Chorus, or Orchestra), GPA minimum (3.7), ensemble directors recommendation, and a good citizen check from the Middle School Office and required service hours for continuing members. These students strive to promote musical achievement, appreciation, and awareness while serving the community through service initiatives such as this one that supports the Opportunity Music Project. The annual Jr. TRI-M induction ceremony will be held on May 19th, 2023, in Panther Hall at 2 pm.
