Students who participated in Ranney Upper School’s first annual Leadership Retreat in August credit the event with jump-starting their school year, explaining that the event helped them set goals and manage expectations for effectively leading their student organizations this year. More than 30 student leaders from a wide variety of Ranney clubs and activities, including student government, National Honor Societies, ESTA, and Mock Trial, participated in the two days of workshops and breakout sessions. Topics ranged from contemplating leadership in an organization, to power sharing, to strategic planning and writing a mission statement. In addition to presentations given by Head of Upper School, Mr. John Lewis and Dean of Students, Mr. David Fischer, students heard from child psychologist, Dr. Laurie Lewis, who demonstrated how different personality types lead and follow within an organization. Mr. Fisher says the retreat was beneficial for students in that it “provided real time, a scarce resource when the school year begins, to establish a direction for their groups, as well as some of the tools they need as leaders to successfully choose this direction.” The Upper School hopes to expand the program next year to include students other area schools.
