Ranney Middle School Swimmers Excel at First-Ever Invitational

Congratulations go to the Girls’ and Boys’ Middle School Swim teams and Coaches Elissa Vaage and Emmett Walling for their outstanding performance in the First Annual Ranney Middle School Swim Invitational, hosted by Ranney on Tuesday, February 24 in the school’s 25-meter pool in the Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics.

The girls’ team took the championship outscoring Pingry 317 to 273.50. Wardlaw-Hartridge finished third with a total of187 points. The boys’ team finished in second place with a total of 238 points, with the championship going to Montclair Kimberly Academy with 360 points.

Ranney Aquatics Director Emmett Walling developed the idea for an invitational as a way to introduce Middle School swimmers to a championship format. “The Middle School team usually ends its season with just one dual meet, which can be anti-climactic,” said Mr. Walling. “This invitational allowed middle swimmers to compete in an exciting season-ending championship.”

The Invitational attracted six teams – Ranney, Pingry, Montclair Kimberly Academy, Oak Hill, Pennington and Wardlaw-Hartridge – and over 150 swimmers. More than 100 spectators were also in attendance, adding an air of excitement to what, according to Coach Walling, is the first swim meet of its kind in our area at the Middle School level.

The Ranney Middle School swimmers and their coaches have now set the bar high for next year’s Invitational. Congratulations on a job well done!
